"If you want to become a friend of civilization, then become an enemy of the truth and a fanatic for harmless balderdash." ~Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
What makes meaning?
How do we explain the inexplicable forces in our minds? -those which sometimes tell us that a winter night's flock of crows, perched silently in a barren tree, is somehow more than just a group of birds? -or the whispering smile in our ears revealing that a cloud's passing wisp on a brilliant sunshine day speaks a joyful message from the future?
The superstitions of old, the augurers, and the omens on the wing, seem foreign to us now; unbelievable.
But they are not so different from that ringing in your ears that can prickle up your neck and make you wonder: "Who is talking about me?" . . . nor the black cat in the road that makes you think for just a second, nor the fingers that you cross, nor the knocking on the table to ward off unwanted visions, once they're spoken.
Meaning is our own, to cobble or weave together in whatever form or fashion we desire. We are the makers and the enactors of our meanings, bringing them up from the depths of a collective or personal psyche. Some of these are passed around in currents of knowledge for ages, seeming to have a life that's all their own. Some fall away in the distance, seeming strange and other to us now.
At Lakes of Fire 2013, ask yourself: "Why do I believe what I believe? What makes me fear or smile at certain happenings? And is there truth to these insights?"
