Help Shape the Future of Lakes by Joining the RIDE Committee

Radical Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity

The recent announcement that Lakes of Fire will have a new, permanent home this year is a clear sign that our community is evolving, and with change comes opportunity. The RIDE Initiative remains committed to helping Lakes grow into a culture where every participant is heard and valued, especially those from marginalized communities who face constant barriers, dismissal, and inaction in their everyday default lives.

Lakes has always been a place of acceptance, but it can be a space of empowerment for those who want to actively shape and improve it when inequity is discovered. To maintain our ever-evolving burn and its community, it is of the utmost importance that we foster an environment where everyone can participate fully and safely as their most authentic selves. To achieve this, it is essential that we strengthen our inclusion efforts, support the psychological safety of our community, and improve accessibility to ensure that all of our participants’ needs are heard, understood, and addressed.

That’s where YOU come in.

If you have ever left Lakes feeling unseen, unheard, tokenized, or psychologically exhausted…

If you’ve experienced a barrier or inequity at the event and thought, “This could have been handled differently”…

If you have ideas to share with your fellow burners in an effort to build real solutions…

If you’re tired of just giving feedback and want to actively take part in making meaningful change toward a more inclusive burn…

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE RIDE COMMITTEE!

This committee is intentionally participant-driven to encourage a more psychologically safe space where folks can be free to share their honest experiences. Therefore, RIDE membership is reserved for participants who are not currently in official leadership roles. If you are a lead and want to let us know how you can support our work, please fill out the interest form linked below to give us a way to contact you.

If you’ve ever thought “Lakes should do better,” this is your opportunity to work alongside passionate and dedicated members of your community to help make it better.

This is not a place to complain and vent your frustrations. This is a place to share your experience, ideas, and passion, and work with other burners to improve systems that leave us feeling unheard or unsafe. If you have complaints and frustrations about Lakes inclusion culture, but don’t have the emotional bandwidth to participate at this time, we get it. We’re working on a path to you, too.

Sometime in the next few weeks, expect to receive a hello and more information on attending our upcoming introductory RIDE Committee meeting.

What We Build, We Build Together.

Nothing about Lakes of Fire happens by accident; it happens because this community shows up, steps in, and takes care of one another. The knowledge, skills, and experience within this group are what make it possible for everything to function safely and sustainably. This community is what makes it all possible. Thank you for being part of it.

We are building a Skilled Volunteer Registry to better understand the talents within our community and connect people with meaningful ways to contribute when opportunities arise.

If you have trade skills, certifications, professional expertise, or practical experience you are willing to share, we would be grateful to hear from you.

If you know someone in our community with skills or experience who may not have received this newsletter, please feel free to share this form with them.

Facebook Group Update: Post Approval + Open Comments

We heard you.

After thoughtful discussion within leadership and meaningful feedback from the community. We’re moving the Lakes of Fire Facebook Group to a post-approval model for all posts, while keeping comments fully open.

Here’s what that means. Starting March 1, 2026:

  • You can still submit posts.
  • People can still comment freely.
  • Hard conversations can still happen.
  • Criticism is not being filtered out.

What is changing is how posts appear on the page.

All posts will go through approval before they’re published. That doesn’t mean your post won’t be approved. It does mean that if we’re releasing important organizational information, your meme masterpiece might wait a few hours while that announcement has time to breathe. We may also experiment with a weekly meme thread so major updates don’t disappear into a sea of mayo memes (we say this with love).

We’ll also consolidate duplicate topics. Instead of fifteen threads saying the same thing, we’ll guide discussion into a central thread. This helps keep information visible and makes the page easier to navigate. It also means questions are more likely to get clear answers rather than being buried in snark and half-truths.

Posts that will be approved

  • Theme camps recruiting, fundraising, or promoting events
  • Department leads sharing needs or deadline reminders already announced
  • General event questions not clearly answered on the website or newsletter
  • Artists seeking assistance, fundraising, or sharing work they’re bringing (art grant recipient or not)
  • Participants sharing what they’re building or bringing and looking for feedback (this may evolve into a weekly thread)

Posts that will not be approved

  • Explicit sexual or drug-related content
  • Trauma-dumping posts with highly specific details (hard conversations are welcome; graphic detail is not required for them to happen)
  • Multiple duplicate posts on the same topic (these will be consolidated)

If a post isn’t approved, the team will reach out directly to explain why and in many cases, simply answer the question if that’s what’s needed.

This change is about focus and clarity giving important updates room to land, keeping conversations organized, and helping the group function as a useful resource for everyone. It does not remove your voice or your ability to engage.

We know this year has brought a lot of change, including a new venue, and we appreciate the community speaking up about the original one-way plan. This updated approach reflects that feedback and represents where leadership has aligned.

To support this shift, we’ll be adding two new moderators to the team. If you’re interested, please fill out the form. You must be in good standing within the Facebook community to be considered.

Thanks for helping keep this space informative, weird, occasionally hilarious, and ultimately helpful.

See you in the threads.

The world can feel like a lot sometimes — so take a breath, drink some water, and remember we’re all just humans doing our best in interesting times. Be kind, offer a little extra grace, and don’t forget to look for small sparks of joy (they count).

When things feel noisy, go make something weird. Art is good medicine — especially when you share it.

If you’d like to contribute to event organization throughout the year, please apply here or reach out to a department lead.

If you’re not receiving the Lakes Letter (this thing!) in your inbox each month, consider signing up. It’s your best source to stay up-to-date on all the details. While you’re there, sign up for volunteering updates from individual departments if you’d like.

May your nights be cozy and warm.

xoxo,
