Lakes Letter-March 16, 2025

A statement from Great Lakes Experimental Arts Inc. and Lakes of Fire

Burning is more than an event, it is a gathering built on self-expression, communal effort, and the belief that a more inclusive, creative, and connected world is possible. When we come together, we create a space where people can be their true selves, free from judgment and oppression. This is not just a celebration; it is a commitment to a way of being.

Great Lakes Experimental Arts Inc. and Lakes of Fire stand in unwavering support of our friends in marginalized communities, including, but not limited to, people of color and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We believe in the fundamental rights of all people — the right to live authentically and without fear of discrimination. As burners and as an organization, we are dedicated to fostering a culture where everyone is genuinely welcomed, valued, and respected.

Some may say that burning exists apart from the default world, but the reality is that principles such as radical inclusion, self-reliance, communal effort, and decommodification challenge the systems and structures that shape our daily lives. These values inspire us to break from consumer-driven norms, rethink how we build community, and take those lessons beyond the burn. The experience doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it sparks ideas and actions that create lasting impact.

Silence in the face of harm is not an option. We will not stand by when fundamental freedoms and human dignity are threatened. Now more than ever, we reaffirm our commitment to the 10 Principles, especially Radical Inclusion. But let us be clear: inclusion does not mean tolerating hate. Welcoming diverse perspectives does not mean making space for harm. True inclusion is rooted in respect and human dignity. Anything less is a betrayal of our values.

We look forward to welcoming ALL of you home to Lakes of Fire in 2025.

Lakes of Fire is a community that exists outside of our event and during difficult times it is important that we continue to live by our values.
