Theme Camp Placement Form is Open!
Hey camp organizers, good news: the Theme Camp Placement Registration form is officially open! If you are planning to bring a camp to Lakes of Fire this year, this is your sign to stop procrastinating and go fill it out. The placement team cannot put you on the map if they do not know you are coming.
You will need to have a rough plan for what your camp is bringing to the burn, plus a layout of your camp footprint and how much space you need. If you already knocked some of this out for the directed ticket form, look at you being all organized. You can reuse that info here and have most of your work done.
Here is the thing: theme camps are part of what makes Lakes of Fire, well, Lakes of Fire. The music, the art, the weird and wonderful experiences, the food. Seriously, have we mentioned the food? We love you all and we are not ashamed to admit that at least some of that love is food-related.
The deadline to submit is [DATE TBD], but do not sit on this one. The placement team is already hard at work drawing the map and planning out camp areas in our new space, and they need your information to make the magic happen.
Go get placed: [FORM LINK]

ESD Needs You: 357 Shifts and Counting
Lakes of Fire’s Emergency Services Department is our community’s safety net, and this year they have 357 shifts to fill. That is not a typo. Recruitment is in full swing and we are not shy about asking for help.
ESD is made up of medical professionals, mental health professionals, firefighters, and dispatchers who are there to keep an eye on things, lend a listening ear, and know when it is time to call in outside help. Think of them as the caring, competent neighbors you never knew you needed until 3am in the woods.
We are specifically looking for nurses, EMTs, therapists, firefighters, and dispatchers. We also have accessibility-friendly Scribe and Dispatcher positions available for those who want to contribute in a support role.
Shifts fill on a rolling basis, so do not sit on this one.
Apply and upload your certifications here: https://lakesoffire.volunteeripate.com/permit-apply?permit=64
Take the ICS 100 Training — Seriously, Do It Now
If you are volunteering with Lakes of Fire, specifically with ESD or Rangers, this one is for you. ICS 100 is a free, self-paced FEMA course that covers the basics of the Incident Command System. Essentially how organized teams communicate and respond when things need to be managed quickly and efficiently. It is not complicated, but it is genuinely useful and all Lakes of Fire leadership is required to take it.
Here is the important part: the ICS 100 self-study course through FEMA was restored on April 16th after being temporarily shut down due to government funding cuts. Nobody knows if or when it might go offline again, so if you have been putting this off, now is the time to stop doing that.
Volunteers are highly encouraged to complete the course sooner rather than later. We have put together a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process without pulling your hair out.

The Greeters Need Shift Leads — Could That Be You?
Before you ever set foot in
the woods, before the music hits and the fire flies, you are going to meet the Greeters. They are some of the first faces you see at Lakes of Fire, welcoming every participant who wants to be greeted. It is a great way to be part of the Lakes of Fire experience from the very start.
This year the Greeters team is looking for Shift Leads, both new and returning. No experience necessary. If you are enthusiastic and reliable, you are already qualified. As a Shift Lead you will be responsible for checking volunteers in at the start of a shift and checking them out at the end. Simple as that.
Shifts fill on a rolling basis so do not sit on this one too long.
Interested? Send an email to greeters@lakesoffire.org and let them know you want in.
Announcing The Official Lakes of Fire Regional Leadership Exchange Program
Ever wanted a behind-the-scenes look at how another event operates? Curious how other regional leaders tackle infrastructure, operations, safety, volunteer coordination, and culture?
We’re excited to launch The Official Lakes of Fire Regional Leadership Exchange Program. An opportunity designed to connect, support, and inspire leaders across regional and community-based events.
This hands-on program gives selected participants the chance to:
- Shadow Lakes of Fire departments and leadership
- Exchange ideas and best practices with fellow event organizers
- Attend leadership meetings and operational discussions
- Bring new knowledge and inspiration back to their home communities
Whether you’re an Event Lead, Coordinator, Producer, or a Board Member, or you’re stepping into leadership, we want to hear from you.
Program Highlights
- Limited to 10 participants
- Includes department shadowing + volunteer experience
- Open to leaders from regional and community-based events
Application will remain open year-round for consideration, but will close for the current event cycle on or around June 1, or before the final sale of event tickets.
This is more than attending an event. It’s an opportunity to collaborate, learn, and strengthen the larger community together.

ArtHub is Open for Business: Teach a Class, Design the Sign
ArtHub is excited to
announce that Artist Academy and Welcome Sign applications are officially open. Got an art, craft, or maker skill you are dying to share with your fellow burners? Apply to teach a class at Nexus. Five instructors will be selected and supply funds plus volunteer hours are available to make it happen.
Speaking of first impressions, we are also accepting applications for this year’s Welcome Sign: the first thing every participant lays eyes on when they arrive at Lakes of Fire. Submit your best ideas and your design could be the one that greets the whole community. Funds are available for sign creation. Apply for both or just one, but do not miss your shot.
2026 Art Grant Recipients
The Art Grants team wants to thank our community for your creativity, ambition, and patience as we navigate through all of the applications and requests received for 2026. Our eleven-person team of grant facilitators and team leads reviewed 66 grant applications submitted for consideration for 2025. Those 36 applications equaled $85,962 in funding requests.
After lots of reading, many team meetings, and lots of emails with applicants, we are proud to say that in 2026, we are able to fund 29 art grant projects totalling $38,269.
Some interesting art grant application facts:
- We had artists from nine states apply for grants.
- Out of the applications received, the following states were represented:
- California
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Nevada
- Ohio
- A handful of projects submitted to the art grant team were existing works of art and did not qualify for grant funding. (Our team funds the creation of NEW work for the event.) Those projects were forwarded to ArtHub’s other funding pool, Honorarium, for consideration, which specifically considers pre-existing work.
- We understand some artists were not able to accept their grant due to the announced venue move. We look forward to seeing future submissions from these artists and hope to be able to grant them funds in the future.
The Art Grant team always struggles to fund as many projects as possible. This year’s applicants went all out, and we are grateful for the work you put into your applications. We are really proud of the 36 artists/teams that submitted thoughtful proposals and are sad that we could not fund everyone.

Now that you have got your ticket makes sure you sign up for your volunteer shifts. Eight hours is all it takes to make sure you don’t have to do the lottery dance again next year. I hope you have begun to create all the things that always help make every year truly magical. Look forward to welcoming you to our new home soon.
If you’d like to contribute to event organization throughout the year, please apply here or reach out to a department lead. If you would like to sign up to transform this new property into our new home, then fill out this form. If you are not a skilled tradesperson, fill out the other slot and let us know what you can do.
If you’re not receiving the Lakes Letter (this thing!) in your inbox each month, consider signing up. It’s your best source to stay up-to-date on all the details. While you’re there, sign up for volunteering updates from individual departments if you’d like.
May the spring showers foster the growth creativity for all of the wonderful things you want to bring to the burn.
